The Microphones

The Microphones byli americkým indie folk, indie rock a experimentálním projektem z města Olympia ve státě Washington. Projekt byl založen v roce 1996 a oficiálně ukončen v roce 2003, i když následovaly krátké reuniony v letech 2007 a opětovné oživení projektu v letech 2019 a 2020-2022. Jediným stálým členem The Microphones byl Phil Elverum, který byl hlavním skladatelem a producentem všech alb kapely. Elverum spolupracoval s řadou dalších hudebníků na nahrávkách a turné, ale projekt zůstal vždy jeho osobním vyjádřením.

Elverum se zapojil do hudební scény ve Washingtonu v polovině 90. let, když pracoval v obchodě s nahrávkami ve svém rodném městě Anacortes. Navázal spolupráci s Calvinem Johnsonem z K Records, což vedlo k vydání několika alb pod tímto labelem. Prvním významným albem bylo Don't Wake Me Up z roku 1999, které Elverumovi přineslo pozornost v indie hudební scéně. Následné album It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water z roku 2000 bylo ještě ambicióznější a kritici ocenili jeho produkci a harmonické vrstvy.

Největšího úspěchu dosáhli The Microphones s albem The Glow Pt. 2 z roku 2001. Toto album bylo významně oceněno kritiky a bylo zařazeno mezi nejlepší alba roku 2001 podle Pitchfork Media, které jej také zařadilo na 73. místo mezi 200 nejlepšími alby dekády 2000. Album je známé pro své osobní témata, jež odrážejí ztracené lásky a vzpomínky na dětství, a je považováno za vrchol Elverumovy tvorby s The Microphones.

Po roce 2003 se Phil Elverum začal zaměřovat na svůj nový projekt Mount Eerie, ale v roce 2019 uspořádal speciální koncert pod jménem The Microphones a v roce 2020 vydal album Microphones in 2020, které obsahuje jednu dlouhou píseň o délce 44 minut a 44 sekund, reflektující jeho život a hledání smyslu. Toto album bylo následováno omezeným počtem koncertů v letech 2021 a 2022, než projekt opět ukončil svou činnost.
