Joe South

Joe South, vlastním jménem Joseph Alfred Souter, byl americký zpěvák, skladatel, kytarista a producent, narozený 28. února 1940. Proslavil se především jako skladatel a v roce 1970 získal cenu Grammy za Píseň roku za Games People Play. V roce 1972 byl opět nominován na stejnou cenu za píseň Rose Garden.

Joe South začal svou hudební kariéru v Atlantě pod vedením Billa Loweryho, kde pracoval jako studiový kytarista pro National Recording Corporation. Později se přesunul do Nashvillu, kde pokračoval ve své kariéře. Jeho první úspěch přišel v roce 1958 s hitem The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor. I když se soustředil hlavně na skládání písní, jeho talent se projevil i v jeho vlastních nahrávkách.

Se svou skupinou Joe South and the Believers, kterou tvořili jeho bratr Tommy a švagrová Barbara, nahrál několik singlů. Skupina měla několik významných hitů, které potvrdily Southovu schopnost nejen jako skladatele, ale i jako interpreta. Jako studiový hudebník hrál na kytaru na albech známých umělců, jako byli Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin a Simon & Garfunkel.

Jedním z jeho největších úspěchů byla píseň Rose Garden, kterou nahrála Lynn Anderson a která se stala hitem v šestnácti zemích. Tato píseň mu vynesla dvě nominace na Grammy. South také napsal hity pro mnoho dalších umělců, mezi nimiž byli například Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash a Dolly Parton.

Osobní život Joe Southa poznamenala tragédie, když jeho bratr Tommy spáchal sebevraždu v roce 1971. Tato událost vedla k jeho klinické depresi. Přesto se mu podařilo postupně vrátit k hudbě a v roce 1987 se oženil podruhé. Toto manželství mu pomohlo znovu najít inspiraci k psaní písní.

Za svůj život získal Joe South několik poct, včetně uvedení do Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame v roce 1979 a Georgia Music Hall of Fame v roce 1981. Zemřel 5. září 2012 na infarkt ve věku 72 let.
