C
A few days ago I helped hang a man.
From then on I hadn't
been able to sleep at all.

Cause each night I wake up from the same
              F C G
bad dream and I tremble.
C F
Sometimes it causes me to tremble,
         C G C
tremble, tremble.

The screaming lynching gang
F
came into town to hang
C F
The prisoner at the jail and so
                     C
we took him from his cell
                        F
We took him out of jail without a trial or bail
C F C
Drug him on the ground to a hill outside of town
F
There on a scaffold high,
B
we hung him till he died
F B
Then we even tore the clothes
                  F
off of him that he wore,
G
Lord.

C F C
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Interlude 1
C G C
C F
And as his mother kneeled, all the earth was still,
C
clouds covered up the sun.
F C
We all said God's will has been done.
F B
The prisoner's friends then claim his body
             F B
and they lay him in a simple grave inside
           F
a mountain cave,
G
Lord
    C F C
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
