Fruit Bats

Fruit Bats je americká indie rocková kapela založená v roce 1997 v Chicagu, Illinois. Projekt vznikl jako dílo zpěváka a skladatele Erica D. Johnsona, který je jediným stálým členem kapely. Ostatní hudebníci se k Fruit Bats připojují v různých fázích živých vystoupení a studiových nahrávek.

V pozdních 90. letech a na začátku 2000. let Eric D. Johnson vyučoval kytaru a banjo na Old Town School of Folk Music v Chicagu a byl frontmanem indie rockové kapely I Rowboat. Současně nahrával domácí kazety pod jménem Fruit Bats. V roce 2001 vydali své první album Echolocation v produkci Briana Decka a debutovali živě v Chicago's Empty Bottle. Následně kapela intenzivně koncertovala, často jako předkapela známých skupin jako The Sadies, Modest Mouse a The Shins.

V roce 2002 podepsali smlouvu se Sub Pop Records a vydali album Mouthfuls. Toto album obsahuje jejich charakteristickou píseň "When U Love Somebody", která se objevila ve filmu Youth in Revolt a byla přezpívána několika kapelami. Po několika letech spolupráce s The Shins, Johnson znovu oživil Fruit Bats a v roce 2009 vydali album The Ruminant Band, které bylo kriticky úspěšné.

Po období nečinnosti Johnson v roce 2015 opět obnovil Fruit Bats a v roce 2016 vydali album Absolute Loser, které obsahuje populární singl "Humbug Mountain Song". V roce 2018 kapela podepsala smlouvu s Merge Records a vydala album Gold Past Life, které bylo pozitivně přijato kritiky. Následoval cover alba Siamese Dream od The Smashing Pumpkins v roce 2020 a v roce 2021 album The Pet Parade.

Fruit Bats jsou známí svým rozmanitým hudebním stylem, který se vyvíjel od lo-fi indie Americana po disco-inspirované zvuky. Eric D. Johnson čerpá inspiraci z Top 40 rádií 70. a 80. let a z kapel jako The Velvet Underground a The Beatles. Kapela si získala své místo na scéně díky osobitému zvuku a schopnosti přizpůsobovat se různým hudebním vlivům.
