Don Gibson

Don Gibson, celým jménem Donald Eugene Gibson, byl americký zpěvák, skladatel a hudebník, narozený 3. dubna 1928 v Shelby, Severní Karolína. Jako člen Country Music Hall of Fame se proslavil zejména svými country standardy jako Sweet Dreams a I Can't Stop Loving You. Přezdívaný "The Sad Poet" díky svým písním o samotě a ztracené lásce, Gibson zažil sérii hitů od roku 1957 až do poloviny 70. let, včetně známého Oh Lonesome Me.

Don Gibson vyrůstal v chudé dělnické rodině a školu opustil již ve druhé třídě. Jeho první kapela, Sons of the Soil, mu umožnila v roce 1949 nahrát první desku pro Mercury Records. V roce 1957 se přestěhoval do Nashvillu, kde spolupracoval s producentem Chetem Atkinsem na nahrávání písní Oh Lonesome Me a I Can't Stop Loving You pro RCA Victor. Tyto skladby se staly hity jak na country, tak popových hitparádách.

V 60. a 70. letech nahrál Gibson úspěšné duety s Dottie West, jako například Rings of Gold a There's a Story Goin' Round. Rovněž spolupracoval se Sue Thompson na písních jako I Think They Call It Love. Jeho píseň I Can't Stop Loving You byla nahrána více než 700 interprety, včetně slavné verze od Raye Charlese v roce 1962. Další jeho známá skladba, Sweet Dreams, se stala hitem v podání Patsy Cline.

Don Gibson byl uveden do Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame v roce 1973 a do Country Music Hall of Fame v roce 2001. V roce 2010 byl poctěn členstvím v North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
