My daddy was a cotton farmer He found a little place 40 acres on the river Seven kids to raise He never looked back Made sure we was fed We all were just happy To have a roof over our heads Wake us up at daylight Momma had the breakfast on We ate like hungry wolves Then walked out in the dawn Picked up a 9 foot sack And strapped it on And stay out in the fields Untill the day was gone We was poor But we didn't know it The patches on our clothes Only thing that showed it We had food in the garden Watermelon on the vine A clean river for swimming At quitting time Take off the 9 foot sack And lay it down And stay out in the water Till the sun goes down
