The first bomb exploded down beside the warf
They hit the USS Pirie and the oil stores
The Neptune went up in a ball of flame
The black smoke rose when the Zero's came

Darwin rumbled when the first bombs fell
Thousand pounders blew the town apart
They hit the post office on the esplanade
A family died in the surprise attack
But the AA batteries were fightin' 'em back
The second wave unloaded on the aerodrome
Machine guns rattled and bombs exploded
Hangars blazing as the shrapnel flies
